The company was founded in 1864 by Max Gütermann in Vienna. In 1867 he built Gütermann’s first factory in the German Black Forest Village of Gutach. With its’ simple supply of soft, clear water, Gutach was considered an ideal base for the manufacturing and dyeing of silk.
Today, Gütermann employs over 2000 people, Gütermann threads are sold in over 80 countries around the world and the company remains based in Gutach and is run by the same family.
