Making Up

This quilt looks more complicated than it really is, if you look closely you will see that there are twenty five blocks in total, using seven colourways in a design of four columns of four blocks and three columns of three blocks. In each block the background colour and the black strips remain the same.

Working from left to right the colour sequence for the columns is as follows:

Column 1 – fabrics 10/2/9 – 4 blocks required

Column 2 – fabrics 9/2/8 – 4 blocks required

Column 3 – fabrics 8/2/7 – 4 blocks required

Column 4 – fabrics 7/2/6 – 4 blocks required

Column 5 – fabrics 6/2/5 – 4 blocks required

Column 6 – fabrics 5/2/4 – 4 blocks required

Column 7 – fabrics 4/2/10 – 4 blocks required

From the list above you will see that there is a progression of colours down the columns from 10 to 4 on the left side of the blocks and from 9 – 10 on the right side

Before you begin to sew it is a good idea to put all the fabrics for each set of blocks in separate piles so that you can locate them easily as you work.

Remember to press each seam as you sew.

Block construction

All of the blocks are made in the same way, please look carefully at diagram 1 and work as follows:

1. Make the centre strip of the block first; sew a small triangle to opposite sides of the centre square.

2. Next sew a small triangle to the top of one square and the bottom of the other square, refer to the diagram at each step.

3. Sew all the centre sections together.

4. Attach the black strips to each side of this piece and trim to size at a 45º angle.

5. Lastly attach the large triangles to left and right – in column 1 this would becolours 10 and 9.

6. Now make all the blocks for each column, there are twenty five in total.

7. Lay out all of the blocks in order, referring to the diagram and the picture for guidance, lay the black triangles in place as well.

8. The quilt is assembled in diagonal rows, working from top left to bottom right. Press each row’s seam in opposite directions to make assembly easier.

9. Sandwich together the top, wadding and backing fabric and quilt by hand or machine in an all-over swirling pattern.

10. To complete the quilt, add a black binding.
